Founded in Jerusalem in 1128, the Teutonic Order is the third great religious and military order of chivalry to emerge from the Crusades. The first knights of this order were called Brothers of St. Mary and their primary vocation was to relieve sick or wounded Crusaders, before being reorganized in 1190 into a military order. This revival subjected the knights to both the rule of the Hospitallers and that of the Templars.
