Considerato uno dei migliori giocatori dei cinquant'anni di storia della NBA, secondo una votazione condotta nel 1996, la sua rivalità con Magic Johnson è stata uno dei fattori della rinascita della NBA, rinascita che è continuata con l'avvento di Michael Jordan.
Larry Bird ha ricevuto tre volte il premio NBA Most Valuable Player e due volte il premio NBA Finals MVP. Nel 1998 è stato inserito nella Basketball Hall of Fame.
